COMMON POCKET
Walking through Hikarigaoka, we found small pockets of open space and greenery nestled within its large-scale residential fabric. Bridges and stairways create layered connections, while trees appear between and around the buildings, giving the neighborhood its distinctive spatial character.
Inspired by this urban structure, we developed the concept of “COMMON POCKET.”
A pocket can hold everyday objects, keep something precious, or simply warm a hand. In the same way, we imagined architecture as a collection of small spaces that embrace different moments of everyday life — places to pause, sit, meet, or spend time.
Throughout the building, a series of pockets — bridges across the atrium, planted terraces, benches, alcoves, and a lounge — create places of different scales and characters. Connected three-dimensionally, they transform circulation into a shared landscape where people can sense the presence of others and the surrounding greenery.
The facade draws inspiration from the trees of Hikarigaoka. Vertical GRC louvers are shaped with randomly carved semicircular profiles, creating changing patterns of light and shadow. Repeated across the facade, they give the building the depth and rhythm of a grove of trees.
By creating pockets throughout the architecture and allowing them to be loosely shared, the project proposes a new landscape for everyday living.
