Interstice of Strata
Utsunomiya’s landscape was formed through volcanic activity and sedimentation beginning some 15 million years ago, leaving traces of deep time in its geology. Drawing on this history, the shared spaces are conceived as an “Interstice of Strata”—a space emerging between layers accumulated over time.
At the entrance, geological phenomena are translated into architecture: layers of volcanic stone, light filtering through gaps, reflections on water, excavated voids, and fragments of stone. At the far end, 2,500-mm-long, 40-mm-thick solid glass panels are stacked in layers, their illuminated edges creating a stratification of light.
The artworks extend this idea through material, trace, action, and memory. Reflections on water and works formed through processes of layering and carving create a landscape shaped by different expressions of time.
On the second floor, books and shelves form strata of knowledge, extended through light and reflection. Along the residential corridors, geological fissures are abstracted as illuminated slits in the ceiling.
Upon 15 million years of geological time, new layers continue to form—architecture, art, knowledge, and everyday life. “Interstice of Strata” is where these different layers of time meet.
