界 草津では、建築だけではなく、その土地の風景や文化を構成する素材や手仕事までを含めて、一つの体験としてデザインした。
伊達冠石による景石、栗の割材を用いたベンチ、木立をモチーフとしたオリジナルの椅子やテーブル、木製の階数サイン、群馬の伝統こけしを抽象化したオブジェ、繭から生まれる「きびそ」を用いた照明、そして須藤玲子氏との協働による絹のファブリック。それぞれは独立したプロダクトではなく、草津という土地の記憶や自然環境、地域文化を建築空間へと編み込むための要素として計画された。
工芸は装飾ではない。土地の素材や技術、人の営みを現代の空間へと翻訳し、滞在を通して風景を知覚するためのメディアである。
建築、家具、アート、サイン、ファブリック、照明。それらを一体として設計することで、界 草津ならではの風景体験を細部から支えている。



Handcrafted Details of the Landscape

At KAI Kusatsu, the design extends beyond architecture to encompass furniture, objects, materials, and craft, forming a unified spatial experience rooted in place.
Landscape stones carved from Date-Kanmuri stone, benches made from split chestnut timber, custom-designed chairs and tables inspired by the rhythm of forest trunks, handcrafted wooden wayfinding signs, abstract reinterpretations of traditional Gunma kokeshi dolls, lighting crafted from kibiso—the coarse outer layer of silk cocoons—and bespoke textiles developed in collaboration with textile designer Reiko Sudo. Rather than functioning as individual objects, these elements collectively embody the memory, materiality, and cultural identity of Kusatsu.
Craft is not treated as decoration. It is a medium through which local materials, traditional techniques, and regional narratives are translated into contemporary architecture. Each detail contributes to an immersive experience that allows guests to encounter the landscape through touch, texture, and everyday use.
Architecture, furniture, lighting, textiles, signage, and art were conceived as a single design language, where every element reinforces the unique sense of place that defines KAI Kusatsu.
