草津の風景は、一枚の景色として眺めるものではない。湯畑へ向かう路地、西の河原を歩く時間、高原の散策路、湯釜へと続く山道。歩き、立ち止まり、季節や自然現象を身体で感じながら、土地を知覚していく体験そのものが草津の魅力である。上信越高原の山並み、高原植物、強酸性の温泉が生み出す白濁した流れ、絶え間なく立ちのぼる湯煙、冬には粉雪が静かに降り積もる。自然は絶えず姿を変え、その変化が土地の固有性を形づくっている。

界 草津では、こうした土地が本来もつ風景の知覚を、ホテルという滞在体験の中で再構成することを設計の主題とした。

ゲストはブリッジを渡り、細長く伸びる客室棟へと導かれる。両側を閉じた建築は視界を絞り込み、日常から意識を切り替える閾となる。その先に上信越高原の山並みが現れ、滞在の中で最初に風景と出会う。この客室棟は、高原への入口となると同時に、滞在体験の始まりを示す建築として計画した。

その先には、森の中にご当地学棟、ラウンジ棟、湯小屋棟の三つの離れが点在する。それぞれが地域文化、寛ぎ、温泉という異なる体験を担いながら、高原の森に溶け込むように配置されている。さらに森の小道は、空中歩廊、エレベーター、トンネルを経て、西の河原、温泉街、湯畑へと続く。高低差のある地形を歩き、降り、抜ける一連の移動そのものが、高原から温泉街へと風景が移り変わるシークエンスとなり、ホテルの体験は建築の内部から草津という土地全体へと広がっていく。

客室や共用部では、高原の風景を抽象化した空間表現を試みた。折れ曲がる天井は上信越高原の稜線を写し取り、施設全体ではテキスタイルデザイナー須藤玲子氏との協働により、群馬の繊維文化を象徴する上州の絹を用いたテキスタイルを展開した。絹は光や風を柔らかく受け止め、建築と土地をつなぐ層として機能している。

建築は風景を模倣するものではない。土地が育んできた自然や文化、人々の営みを読み解き、その関係を新たな体験として再編集する媒介である。界 草津では、ホテルを目的地ではなく、草津という土地をより深く知覚するための建築として構想し、風景を滞在体験へと編み直すことを試みた。



Reframing Landscape into Architecture

The landscape of Kusatsu is not defined by a single view. It is discovered through movement—walking narrow streets toward Yubatake, wandering through the forests of Sainokawara Park, following mountain trails across the plateau, and experiencing the changing seasons and natural phenomena with the body. This journey is what gives Kusatsu its distinctive character. The mountain ranges of Joshinetsu, alpine vegetation, the milky waters created by the town’s highly acidic hot springs, ever-rising steam, and the quiet snowfall of winter together form a landscape that is constantly changing, shaping the unique identity of the place.

For KAI Kusatsu, our design began with the ambition to reinterpret this way of experiencing the landscape within the setting of a hotel.

Guests first cross a bridge before entering a long, linear guest room building. Enclosed on both sides, the architecture deliberately narrows one’s field of vision, creating a threshold that gently separates everyday life from the experience ahead. Emerging beyond this sequence, the mountain landscape of the Joshinetsu Highlands becomes the guest’s first encounter with the surrounding nature. The building serves not only as the entrance to the resort, but also as the beginning of the journey through the landscape.

Beyond it, three detached pavilions—the Local Culture Pavilion, the Lounge Pavilion, and the Bath Pavilion—are carefully dispersed throughout the forest. Each offers a distinct experience of local culture, relaxation, or hot springs while quietly dissolving into the surrounding woodland. Forest paths continue through elevated walkways, an elevator, and a tunnel, eventually connecting guests to Sainokawara Park, the hot spring town, and finally Yubatake. Walking, descending, and passing through the site’s dramatic topography becomes a carefully choreographed sequence, allowing the scenery to gradually transform from the highland forest to the lively town below. In this way, the hotel experience expands beyond the architecture itself to embrace the landscape of Kusatsu as a whole.

Within the guest rooms and shared spaces, the landscape of the plateau is expressed in an abstract architectural language. Folded ceilings echo the ridgelines of the surrounding mountains, while textiles developed in collaboration with textile designer Reiko Sudo reinterpret Joshu silk, one of Gunma’s most celebrated cultural traditions. Softly filtering light and movement, the fabric creates a delicate layer that connects architecture with the memory of the land.

Architecture should not imitate nature. Rather, it should interpret the relationships between landscape, culture, and human activity, transforming them into new experiences. At KAI Kusatsu, the hotel is conceived not simply as a destination, but as a medium through which guests can engage more deeply with the spirit of Kusatsu. It is an architecture that reframes landscape as experience.
